Do you have any led classes?

The primary functions of led classes in Ashtanga yoga are to ensure that students know the correct vinyasa and to challenge them to follow the teacher’s count. Led primary series classes traditionally do not include verbal instructions on asana technique and are meant to serve as a supplement to individualized technical instruction in Mysore-style classes, not as a primary means of instruction. We have one Sanskrit-counted led primary series classes each week that is part of our daily Mysore program and intended for Mysore students, but anyone with previous experience practicing the primary series may also attend.

Do I need to know the full primary series in order to attend a Mysore class?

Mysore classes are open to all students, even new beginners, although we do require a minimum commitment of one month with attendance at least three times per week for new beginners to Ashtanga yoga. Students who have already learned at least part of the primary series of Ashtanga yoga are welcome to attend our Mysore classes on any single or multiple class pass. Your practice here will start with whatever you are currently able to do and will build from there to grow and deepen your yoga practice, adding new postures when you are ready for them.

What if I have already begun practicing the intermediate series?

All new students should practice the primary series only initially. Requests to practice beyond the primary series at a later point will be considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the quality of the student's primary series practice and where and how the student has begun learning the intermediate series. Visitors from out-of-town who have a regular practice of the intermediate or advanced series and who wish to practice with us without receiving instruction or adjustments may do so upon prior request.

Do you use blocks, straps, or other “props”?

As the intelligent use of yoga props can sometimes enable faster progress by facilitating the actions that generate the type of physical and energetic openings a student is working towards, we do encourage limited use of them in certain situations. As with all instructional tools, the use of props or other modifications will be addressed individually for each student, with the ultimate goal always being to assist the student in most effectively moving in the direction of the fullest expression of each asana.

I have never attended a yoga class. What should I bring to class?

Wear lightweight, comfortable yoga or fitness clothing and be prepared to sweat. You will need a thin sticky yoga mat (not a thick, Pilates-style mat), but we do have a couple available to lend if you do not have one yet. You may bring water but you should not drink it during the class; before or after is fine. It is best to refrain from eating for at least two to three hours prior to class. Please avoid wearing perfumes, colognes, deodorants, or other fragrances to the studio and shower or bathe prior to class if possible.
